Mobile Intensive Care Transport

MICU Transport in Houston

Preferred EMS provides Mobile Intensive Care Unit (MICU) ambulance transportation for patients whose transport needs call for a higher level of clinical support during transit. We coordinate MICU transportation with hospitals, healthcare facilities, referring providers, and Preferred EMS dispatch throughout Greater Houston.

What Is MICU Transport?

Mobile Intensive Care Unit (MICU) transport is a level of ambulance transportation intended for patients whose transport needs may call for a higher level of clinical support during transit than standard BLS or ALS transport. MICU transports are coordinated with the referring healthcare team and Preferred EMS dispatch to support appropriate patient movement.

MICU transport may be appropriate when a patient's transport needs require a higher level of clinical support during transit. The appropriate level of transport should be based on the patient's needs and coordinated with the referring healthcare team and Preferred EMS dispatch.

MICU represents the highest level of transport within the Preferred EMS service spectrum. Preferred EMS also offers BLS and ALS transport, and our dispatch team works with referring healthcare providers to help identify the level of service that fits each patient's transport requirements.

When MICU Transport May Be Appropriate

The following are general examples of situations where MICU transport may be requested or considered. The appropriate level of transport is always determined in coordination with the referring healthcare team and Preferred EMS dispatch — not independently by this website.

Interfacility transfers where a higher level of clinical support may be requested

Moving patients between hospitals or healthcare facilities when the referring team has identified a need for a higher level of clinical support during transit than BLS or ALS would provide.

Transfers involving patients with complex transport requirements

Transports where the referring healthcare team has determined that the patient's transport requirements may call for MICU-level coordination and support.

Hospital-to-hospital transfers requiring advanced coordination

Coordinated transfers between acute care facilities where the care team has identified the need for a higher level of transport service.

Long-distance medical transport with higher-acuity considerations

Extended-range transports where the referring team identifies higher-acuity transport needs that may warrant MICU-level service for the duration of the journey.

Transfers where the referring healthcare team requests MICU-level service

Any transport where the referring provider, case manager, or discharge team has specifically requested MICU-level ambulance service based on the patient's transport needs.
